Curriculum

At Leigh Creek Area School, we provide a broad and engaging curriculum that supports students from Reception to Year 12. Our learning programs are designed to build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, while also encouraging curiosity, creativity, resilience and confidence.

Students are supported to learn in ways that connect classroom teaching with real-world experiences, local culture, community partnerships and the unique environment of the Northern Flinders Ranges.

Our curriculum includes core learning areas, specialist programs and practical experiences that help students develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities they need for future learning, training, employment and community life.

Literacy

At a primary level we use the PLD (Promoting Literacy Development) program which engages students in literacy by using evidence-based strategies, targeted phonics, and multisensory activities that cater to individual learning needs. This approach supports skill development in reading, writing, and spelling, building student confidence and fostering a love of literacy.

Secondary students engage with Department for Education (DfE) units and are provided with structured, curriculum-aligned learning experiences that promote critical thinking and subject mastery. These units incorporate real-world contexts and interactive tasks, supporting student engagement and the development of essential skills that provide opportunities for students to make meaning of their world.

Senior secondary students have opportunities to explore and refine their areas of interest through studies with Open Access College.

Maths/Numeracy

We have a whole school approach to mathematics through the “Learning through doing” program. The program actively engages students by encouraging hands-on activities and problem-solving, making mathematical concepts more accessible and relevant to their everyday lives.

This approach fosters curiosity and deepens understanding by allowing students to experiment, explore, and collaborate, promoting a positive attitude towards mathematics.

Veggie Garden

Students at Leigh Creek have opportunities to connect curriculum and classroom learning to real world scenarios that enable students to make meaning and deepen understanding in science, literacy and numeracy.
Students enjoy working in the school garden as well as excursions to the nearby Copley gardens where they learn alongside members of the community.

Adnyamathanha Language

The Adnyamathanha language program is led by Noel Wilton, Adnyamathanha Elder. Using language applications, explicit instruction, learning through song and learning on country students develop a deeper understanding of Adnyamathanha language and culture which empowers students to be able to understand and express their collective and individual identity as young Australians.

Food Technology

Students enjoy food technology lessons where they explore healthy lifestyles, food practices and technologies and monitor food waste. We have partnered with OZHarvest and the Feast program to explore sustainable food practices and creating nutritious foods using fresh in season produce.

Sporting programs

Our school has use of both a school oval, a courtyard grassed area and a community oval. This provides opportunities for PE lessons at the junior primary level to be in a small area while senior students have access to larger sporting facilities.
